Yes, we are a bookstore! But we invite Catholic and non-Catholics alike to browse our shelves seeking truth and He Who is Truth itself. Our reading/prayer room and sun porch are great places to sit and seek the information, inspiration and invitation you desire. Come and see.

HOURS
The Interior Castle is now open on Saturdays from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
As always, we welcome appointments; and, look for the flags flying to catch us open "by chance".

Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is the final day before Lent begins. It is celebrated with family and friends, parades and special foods. Don't think Bourbon Street: think the Lexington or Buena Vista Christmas parades. Neighbors plan the parades and parties over Summer barbeques and Fall get-togethers. That's kind of what we do here at The Interior Castle. We hope you will join us this year!
Yes, we sure enough sell books! Not just Catholic books (although that is our passion); we also stock some of "the classics", both for adults and children.
Not ready to commit? We invite you to settle into one of our couches for a visit with a well-loved book or to make the acquaintance of a new author. "No charge."
These hand-wrapped rosaries are truly A Gift for a Lifetime. Each rosaries is unique, featuring gemstones, and pearls, comparable rosaries sell online for hundreds of dollars. Special requests are possible, depending on the artisan's schedule. Just ask!
One of our goals is to introduce guests to the great treasures of the Catholic tradition, including contemporary commentary and reflection.
Here you will find a selection of the following publications: Antiphon; Communio; First Things; Sword&Spade; Adoremus; The National Catholic Register; Magnificat; Salvo, and more.
A 2000+ year tradition in the Catholic Church, veils (no longer "required" since the revision of the Canon Law in 1983), are making a comeback. The Interior Castle has a large selection of beautiful veils from Spain, Australia, and here in Rockbridge County.
An interesting article on veiling for your consideration: https://laycistercians.com/why-catholics-wear-chapel-veils/
We offer a small selection of religious medals and scapulars, and are happy to place special orders for your patron saint's medal.
Let's begin with a disclaimer: we're not theologians! But we do our best to address questions about the Catholic Faith when asked. We have lively and spirited discussions and we invite you to join in.
The Castle is available for study, book clubs and other meetings. At no cost.
The Interior Castle is an independent bookstore.

The Director of the Vatican Observatory, Brother Guy Consolmagno, S.J., would answer: "If he asked me."
"Interreligious dialogue does not merely aim at mutual understanding and friendly relations. It reaches a much deeper level, that of the spirit, where exchange and sharing consist in a mutual witness to one's beliefs and a common exploration of one's respective religious convictions. ...
Through confrontation, dialogue, and peaceful competition with the great world religious traditions, by the power of the [Holy] Spirit, Christians increase their understanding of their own faith and are impelled to live it ever more fully with fidelity and love."
To further this end, the store carries a large selection of books from Protestant, Jewish, and Islamic faith traditions.
Love books? Seek a quiet place to reflect? Love sharing the Faith? You don't have to be a theologian to volunteer at the Castle. We are always hopeful of expanding our hours. Please let us know if you would like to join us!
Visit The Interior Castle Bookstore when you are in Lexington. We are located in (probably) the oldest building in town (ca. 1780), on the first floor only.
By the way: the upper floor is an AirBNB (Search online for "The Castle c.1780").
Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine, There's always laughter and good red wine.
At least I've always found it so, Benedicamus Domino!
- Hilaire Belloc
In support of the 'theology of the home', we now carry coffee mugs, dish towels, cookbooks, and to oversee it all, Madonnas of the kitchen.
Looking for that special, non-cluttering and quintessentially Catholic gift? Consider something for the larder. We now carry biscotti and coffee (a cuppa "John Paul II Peruvian Dark Roast" perhaps?).
Watch for additional offerings, particularly of items made by monks and nuns whose products support their life of prayer and service.
We now carry ChewsLife products, including rosaries for infants, bibs and decades.
We carry a select variety of cards throughout the year, with Christmas cards becoming available in November.
Not just for Christmas! Adorn your home or office with reminders of your Faith; practice the presence of God throughout your day.
Lovingly made by a St. Patrick's (Lexington, VA), parishioner, these one-of-a-kind kneelers will grace your home's oratory. (They come with a kneeling pad!)
Few...but "choice". Including works by Thomas Marsh: "Archangel" and "Madonna and Child".
Our customers asked "do you carry this?" and pretty soon, our bookstore branched out into other sought-after items.
Lacking all self-control, we also obtain items on the spur-of-the-moment because they are too good to pass up. For instance, hand-crafted olive wood items from the Holy Land. These are few in number so check in frequently to see what's new!
The necklace depicted was made by adults with disabilities at the Rockbridge Area Occupational Center. Sadly, it is now defunct. The beads are manufactured by the Kazuri Bead company, established in the 1970's to provide employment for women living in poverty in Nairobi, Kenya. The beads are now sold world-wide.
